«Amour et justice» is the philosophical essay by Paul Ricœur, published by Éditions Points in paperback (110 pages, in French).
Against the common trope opposing «love or justice», Paul Ricœur argues that there is a dialectical and fruitful relationship between love of neighbour and justice seeking equity, and that this tension manifests itself in action. Love and justice participate in an economy of gift that overflows ethics: the logic of superabundance constantly challenges the logic of equivalence.
The reflection, first published in Germany in a bilingual edition, is completed in this French edition with two articles from the Fonds Ricœur. The book belongs to the Points Essais collection.
A work for readers of contemporary philosophy interested in the dialogue between individual ethics and social justice.
Jean Paul Gustave Ricœur was a French philosopher best known for combining phenomenological description with hermeneutics. As such, his thought is within the same tradition as other major hermeneutic phenomenologists, such as Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Gabriel Marcel. In 2000, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy for having "revolutionized the methods of hermeneutic phenomenology, expanding the study of textual interpretation to include the broad yet concrete domains of mythology, biblical exegesis, psychoanalysis, theory of metaphor, and narrative theory."
