«Alegría» is the poetry collection by José Hierro, published by Ediciones Torremozas in paperback (100 pages, in Spanish).
«Alegría» starts from the shared experience of pain and joy to offer a vitalist view of everyday existence. With direct and sober language, José Hierro avoids sentimental drama and turns suffering into a path toward hope, in a key work of postwar Spanish poetry.
The collection won the Adonáis Poetry Prize in 1947; this edition dates from 2002.
A reference work for scholars of contemporary Spanish literature and for those seeking an approach to postwar lyric poetry.

José Hierro del Real, sometimes colloquially called Pepe Hierro, was a Spanish poet. He belonged to the so-called postwar generation, within the rootless and existential poetry streams. He wrote for both Espadaña and Garcilaso magazines. In 1981, he received the Prince of Asturias Awards in Literature, in 1998 the Cervantes Prize and he received many more awards and honours.
