In this novel by Doris Lessing, we continue the story of Martha Quest, a portrait of the modern woman in search of her emancipation. The plot follows Martha's personal and political adventures in British Africa during World War II, her second marriage, and her foray into communism. A work that reveals the paradoxes, passions, and ironies of life in Anglo-Saxon Africa of the 20th century.
