«A Companhia do Diabo» is the historical mystery novel by David Liss, published by Almedina in paperback (390 pages, in Portuguese).
In 1722 London, Benjamin Weaver, a Portuguese Jew, swordsman and former pugilist, is blackmailed by Jerome Cobb into stealing documents from the British East India Company. The theft is the first step in a conspiracy that threatens the nation: Weaver must infiltrate the Company and unmask spies and officials.
It is the third instalment in the Benjamin Weaver series; the English original is titled The Devil's Company.
For readers of historical and mystery fiction, especially those who enjoy conspiracies, espionage and 18th-century London.

David Liss is an American writer of novels, essays and short fiction; more recently working also in comic books. He was born in New Jersey and grew up in South Florida. Liss received his BA degree from Syracuse University, an MA from Georgia State University and his M. Phil from Columbia University. He left his post-graduate studies of 18th Century British literature and unfinished dissertation to write full-time. "If things had not worked out with fiction, I probably would have kept to my graduate school career track and sought a job as a literature professor," he said.
