«Dances and Ballads» is the jazz album by World Saxophone Quartet, released in 1993 by Warner on CD.
On this album, the quartet plays with soprano, two altos and tenor and dispenses with the rhythm section to perform ten original compositions by Julius Hemphill, David Murray, Oliver Lake and Hamiet Bluiett. It alternates slow ballads like «For Lester» with more energetic pieces like «Belly Up» and «Dance Until Dawn (For Little Anthony)».
The album is from 1987; this CD reissue has catalogue number 7559-79164-2 and DDD digital recording.
Will appeal to fans of avant-garde jazz and free jazz, particularly those who appreciate a saxophone quartet without rhythmic accompaniment.
