Juana la Loca is a historical drama directed by Vicente Aranda that chronicles the life of Joanna of Castile, known as 'Joanna the Mad'. The film explores her political marriage to Philip the Handsome, a union intended to seal a dynastic alliance between the Catholic Monarchs and the Emperor of Germany. However, the story focuses on Joanna's deep and obsessive passion for her husband, whose constant infidelities and court intrigues plunge her into a spiral of jealousy and despair that irreparably damages their marriage and her mental health. This acclaimed Spanish production features a masterful performance by Pilar López de Ayala, who won the Goya Award for Best Actress for her lead role.
