«Jakob der Lügner» is the film by Frank Beyer (1974), starring Vlastimil Brodský, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Erwin Geschonneck, on DVD.
In 1944, in a Jewish ghetto in Eastern Europe, Jakob Heym is briefly detained by the Gestapo and accidentally overhears a radio broadcast about the advance of the Red Army. To give hope to his neighbours, he pretends to have a receiver and invents news from the front; the lie sustains the ghetto's morale, but forces him to keep improvising.
Adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jurek Becker, a DEFA production. Nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1977. Audio: German; subtitles: English, French, Spanish and Hebrew; 96 min.
