«Andrea Chénier» is the opera by Umberto Giordano directed by David McVicar, with Jonas Kaufmann, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Željko Lučić, on DVD (2016).
The action takes place in Paris during the French Revolution. The poet André Chénier is caught up in an era of suspicion and denunciation, and his relationship with Maddalena de Coigny becomes a hymn to freedom and love against the Terror. The work combines great passions with a tragic ending.
With a libretto by Luigi Illica, the recording comes from Covent Garden and is conducted by Antonio Pappano. Subtitles: English, German, Italian, Spanish and French; 123 min.
Recommended for fans of Italian verismo and the great productions of the Royal Opera House, with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role.
