He was born in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia (Canada), on 16 October 1965, into a family of Indian origin.
He earned a law degree from Dalhousie Law School and worked as a litigation lawyer before turning to writing.
He self-published The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari in 1996; HarperCollins acquired the rights and the book has sold more than 5 million copies.
He popularised the 5 AM Club, the idea that rising at 5 and devoting the first hour to oneself transforms productivity.
He has coached executives at NIKE, IBM, Microsoft, FedEx and NASA, as well as New Zealand's All Blacks rugby team.
