Michael Dunlop Young, Baron Young of Dartington, was a British sociologist, social activist and left-wing politician. Young was an urbanist, known as an academic researcher, polemicist and institution-builder.

Michael Young was born in Manchester in 1915 and became a prominent figure in British sociology and politics.

He is world-renowned for coining the term meritocracy in his influential work The Rise of the Meritocracy.

Throughout his prolific career, he wrote nearly 150 works exploring diverse topics such as education, architecture, and philosophy.
