He was born in Oslo on 29 March 1960 and grew up in Molde on Norway's west coast.
Before becoming a novelist he was a youth professional footballer, an economist and the singer of the rock band Di Derre.
The first Harry Hole novel, The Bat (1997), won the Norwegian Riverton Prize for best crime novel.
Several of his books have been adapted into films, including Headhunters (2011) and The Snowman (2017) with Michael Fassbender.
He also writes the children's series Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder.
