Ricardo Gullón Fernández was a Spanish writer, essayist and literary critic. He was born in Astorga, Leon, where he received his primary education. He went to secondary school in France, and studied law at the University of Madrid. He developed a strong friendship with the writer Juan Ramón Jiménez. In 1935, he published his first book Fin de semana. He was imprisoned by the Nationalist forces for collaborating with the republican forces during the Spanish Civil War. He was released with the help of Luis Rosales and Luis Felipe Vivanco. In 1953, he travelled to Puerto Rico to visit his exiled friend Juan Ramón Jiménez and remained there for three years.
