He began working full-time at the age of eleven, spending his spare time studying literature as an autodidact.
He was a pioneer in using fantastical beings in his science fiction novels to critique modern civilization.
In 1917, he co-founded the Empire Poetry League and served as the editor of its literary journal, Poetry.
His visit to Nazi Germany in 1934 inspired him to write a trilogy about a future war in Europe.
