«Un paquebot dans les arbres» is the novel by Valentine Goby, published by Babel in paperback (266 pages, in French).
France, 1950s. Tuberculosis forces Mathilde's parents to enter a sanatorium, and the young woman tries to keep her family from falling apart. The novel follows that silent struggle to care for them and uphold their dignity, in a landscape marked by a large white building among the trees. Valentine Goby thus weaves historical memory, female resistance, and a longing for freedom.
The work was originally published in 2016 by Actes Sud. The action takes place in La Roche-Guyon, where the family runs a café.
