«The Ponder Heart» is the humorous novel by Eudora Welty, published by Mariner Books Classics in paperback (168 pages, in English).
Edna Earle Ponder narrates in a Mississippi town the story of her uncle Daniel, whose excessive generosity and habit of giving away his possessions make him a character as beloved as he is problematic. Tried for the alleged murder of his young wife, the trial reveals misunderstandings and secrets that portray family and community life with irony.
The work was originally published in 1954, received the William Dean Howells Medal, and includes illustrations by Joe Krush.
Suitable for readers of Southern fiction and satirical humor.
