Stephan Haggard is Distinguished Research Professor at the School of Global Policy and Strategy and Research Director for Democracy and Global Governance at the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California Berkeley (1983) and taught in the Government Department at Harvard (1983-1992) before joining the faculty at UC San Diego. From 1992 until 2023, he taught courses on international political economy, the international relations of the Asia-Pacific and qualitative methods. From 2005 to 2022 he was editor of the Journal of East Asian Studies, a journal devoted to publishing innovative social science research on the region.
