The Only Story

Synopsis of The Only Story

In 'The Only Story', Julian Barnes presents a brilliant and moving reflection on love, exploring what we do for it, how we experience it, and what destroys it. Through the story of Paul, who at nineteen falls in love with Susan, a married woman much older than him, Barnes immerses us in a relationship that defies social conventions and whose consequences will mark their lives forever. Decades later, Paul examines his past, confronting the contradictions and deceptions of his own memory, and discovering how our personal narratives shape our existence.
