In Victorian England of 1854, Edward Glyver, an ambitious bibliophile, discovers he can claim an immense fortune. His obsession takes him from the London underworld to the Evenwood mansion, pitting him against Phoebus Rainsford Daunt, poet and criminal, in a story of betrayal, revenge and death.
First instalment of the The Meaning of Night series. Nominated for the Costa Book Award for First Novel in 2006.
For readers of historical fiction and mystery set in Victorian England.

Michael is a common masculine given name usually thought to be from the Hebrew rhetorical question מי כאל, "Who [is] like [the Hebrew god] El?", thus being a theophoric name whose answer is "there is none like El", or "there is none as famous and powerful as God." This question is known in Latin as Quis ut Deus? Paradoxically, the name is also sometimes interpreted as "One who is like God."
