«The Last Flannelled Fool» is Michael Simkins's memoir about cricket, published by Ebury Press in 2012 in paperback (312 pages, in English).
Michael Simkins, a passionate and obsessive Sunday cricketer, faces a blank season after an injury. Instead of drifting aimlessly, he travels through the counties of England in search of the youthful enthusiasm that the game once inspired in him: he visits the birthplace of cricket, the former site of his favourite ground, and even makes peace with modern cricket. The journey culminates in his bowling an over to Freddie Flintoff in a packed stadium, while wondering whether the sport can still bring comfort to his life.
Originally published in 2011 by Random House and reissued in 2012 by Ebury Press. The work belongs to the genre of sports and travel memoir, with a tone of nostalgic homage to English cricket.
Recommended for cricket fans and sports memoir readers; it offers an endearing and humorous portrait of cricket culture in England.
