«Stupeur et tremblements» is the autobiographical novel by Amélie Nothomb, published by Albin Michel in paperback (174 pages, in French).
The novel recreates Amélie Nothomb's experience as an employee in a large Japanese company, where the narrator is subjected to a strict hierarchical order and work practices different from Western ones. With humour and irony, the novel reflects on the cultural clash between Japan and the West and on the place of women in that environment.
The novel was originally published in 1999 and received the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française that same year. The novel also won the Prix des libraires du Québec in 2000.

Baroness Fabienne Claire Nothomb, better known by her pen name Amélie Nothomb, is a Belgian Francophone novelist. Part of her childhood was spent in Asia.
