Merton Sandler FRCP, FRCPath, FRCPsych was a British professor of chemical pathology and a pioneer in biological psychiatry. Together with his colleague Michael Pare, he formulated an early version of the monoamine hypothesis of depression in 1959. They proposed that the condition results from a deficiency of monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain, and this work contributed to the development of modern antidepressants. He also demonstrated that deprenyl (selegiline) was a safe and effective treatment for Parkinson's disease, and he produced influential research on migraine, alcoholism and schizophrenia. Over the course of his career he published more than 700 scientific papers, many of which became citation classics.
