«Portrait du joueur» is the novel by Philippe Sollers published by Gallimard in paperback (352 pages, in French).
Philippe Sollers takes up the form of the intimate diary and turns it into a spectacle. A writer returns to a family house among vineyards and, between writing, alcohol and memories, reflects on intellectual life, sexuality, the publishing world and journalism. The prose, baroque and voluptuous, is at once irritating and seductive.
The paperback edition was published in 1987 (Folio collection, number 1786); the novel originally appeared in 1984.
For readers who already know «Femmes» by Philippe Sollers, as this novel continues that work.
