«Por el sótano y el torno» is an urban comedy by Tirso de Molina, published by Castalia Ediciones in paperback (232 pages, in Spanish).
Set in seventeenth-century Madrid, the play shows characters who converse, love and deceive each other through squares and streets, until they accept the proverb of each sheep with its mate. Tirso de Molina recreates the city's famous places and the popular speech of the era, with wordplay and malicious innuendo.
Volume 7 of the Clásicos Madrileños collection, edited by Alonso Zamora Vicente, with critical introduction, bibliography and additional notes.
For readers of classical Spanish theatre and for those who want to approach the Madrid of the Golden Age.
