The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the first book in the trilogy of five by Douglas Adams, is a science fiction comedy that follows the misadventures of Arthur Dent after Earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Dent, along with his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the titular Guide, travel the galaxy and encounter a variety of eccentric characters and absurd situations. The novel is an adaptation of the first four episodes of the 1978 radio series of the same name, and was an instant hit.
