Ma Jian's novel 'Beijing Coma' is a work that defies oblivion and the Chinese government, set in the context of recent Chinese history. Dai Wei, a medical student, is in a coma after being wounded during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. Trapped in his body, Dai Wei recalls the story of his father, his loves, and his passion for literature, while a sparrow at his window announces an imminent change.
Ma Jian is a Chinese-born British writer.
