Este libro es un catálogo de una exposición que tuvo lugar en el IVAM Centre Julio González del 2 de abril al 14 de junio de 1998, y en el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza del 24 de junio al 12 de octubre de 1998. Paul Klee, una figura emblemática de principios del siglo XX, participó en los amplios movimientos de vanguardia en Alemania y Suiza. Desde el vibrante movimiento Blaue Reiter hasta el surrealismo a finales de la década de 1930 y durante sus años de enseñanza en la Bauhaus, intentó capturar la naturaleza orgánica y armónica de la pintura aludiendo a otros medios artísticos como la poesía, la literatura y, sobre todo, la música. Si bien colaboró con artistas como August Macke y Alexej von Jawlensky, su asociación más famosa fue con el expresionista abstracto, Wassily Kandinsky.
