In this book, Edgar Morin presents the central problems of education and enunciates seven knowledge necessary for the generations of the 21st century. Morin proposes seven fundamental knowledge that the education of the future must treat in any society and culture, without exclusion or rejection, according to the forms and rules of each one. The author exalts the human condition and terrestrial identity, and invites to teach the art of facing uncertainties and understanding, as a guarantee of peace.

Edgar Morin was a French philosopher and sociologist of the theory of information who has been recognised for his work on complexity and "complex thought", and for his scholarly contributions to such diverse fields as media studies, politics, sociology, visual anthropology, ecology, education, and systems biology. He held two bachelors degrees, one in history and geography and one in law, and never did a Ph.D.
