«Os Mensageiros Secundários» is the historical novel by Clara Pinto Correia, published by Relógio D'Água in paperback (376 pages, in Portuguese).
The novel blends the story of Chuck, a Stanford professor, with tales of monsters that appeared in Lisbon in the early 18th century, spread through broadsheets that many saw as a portent of the 1755 earthquake. Between fiction and the history of science, the author reflects on knowledge and the search for the divine.
Published in 2000 in the «Ficção portuguesa» collection, the book reproduces the broadsheets with the drawings of the monsters and includes bibliographic references.
Reading for those who enjoy novels that blend academic research, extraordinary events, and reflection on knowledge.
Clara Pinto-Correia was a Portuguese novelist, journalist and educator.
