«O anjo ancorado» is the short novel by José Cardoso Pires, published by Relógio d'Água in paperback (120 pages, in Portuguese).
The plot centres on the crossing of an affluent city couple with a village stuck in time. Through a dense and symbolic style, José Cardoso Pires portrays the forced stillness of Salazar's Portugal and the distances separating one class from another. The story adopts a parabolic tone that underscores the lack of communication.
This 2015 edition includes a preface by Mário de Carvalho; the work was originally published in 1958.
A work for those interested in twentieth-century Portuguese narrative and in the social allegories of neorealism.
