«Mister Sandman» is the novel by Barbara Gowdy published by A. Kunstmann in hardback (283 pages, in German).
Set in Toronto in the 1950s and 60s, it follows the Canary family, an apparently ordinary Canadian family with secret desires and passions. Little Joan, mute since she hit her head at birth, plays the piano like Mozart without ever having had lessons; around that mystery, a wild and moving comedy is woven.
Translation by Ulrike Becker and Claus Varrelmann, with the subtitle «Roman»; the work was nominated for the Scotiabank Giller Prize in 1995.
For readers of Canadian literary fiction and book clubs, interested in atypical family stories with humour and emotion.
