On the northern coast of Norway, Ingrid Barrøy is born on a small island that bears her surname. In the first half of the 20th century, the life of the fishermen-farmers of the archipelago is a constant struggle for survival. The Barrøy family, however, possesses the determination and skills necessary to thrive. Ingrid's father dreams of a larger island and a different life, longing to build a pier that connects them to the mainland, even if this comes at a price. Ingrid grows up in this environment, facing the sea, storms, birds, and the horizon. However, the cycle of the seasons is interrupted by war and contact with the outside world, marking Norway's awakening to a larger and more modern world. When tragedy strikes the family, Ingrid must fight to protect the home in which she grew up.
