«Los cipreses creen en Dios» is the historical novel by José María Gironella, published by Planeta in paperback (911 pages, in Spanish).
The novel recreates the years before the Spanish Civil War: from 1931 it shows the growing social and political division, the struggle between classes and the weight of ideologies. Its characters embody the different positions —anarchists, communists, Catholics, monarchists— and anticipate the conflict that was to come.
First instalment of the Tetralogy on the Spanish Civil War. The work, originally published in 1953, received the National Narrative Prize.
It will appeal to readers of historical fiction and to those who want to learn, through fiction, about the background to the Spanish Civil War.
