«Les esquimaux vus par Matisse» is the catalogue of the exhibition on Henri Matisse's vision of the Inuit, published by Hazan in paperback (128 pages, in French).
The book accompanies an exhibition organised at the Musée départemental Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis around the poetic text that Georges Duthuit wrote about the Inuit world after returning from his exile in New York in 1945. Matisse, invited by his daughter Marguerite, illustrated that text with drawings of «Eskimo types» inspired by photographs of polar explorers and by his son-in-law's mask collection; the volume also analyses the correspondences between Eskimo art and the figure in Matisse's work.
Catalogue of the exhibition held from 7 November 2010 to 6 February 2011. Produced with the collaboration of Dominique Szymusiak, Claude Duthuit, Rémi Labrusse, Marie Mauzé and Marie-Thérèse Pulvénis de Séligny.
For those interested in the figure of Henri Matisse, Inuit art and twentieth-century art exhibition catalogues.
