«L'Écriture ou la vie» is Jorge Semprún's autobiographical testimony about his deportation to Buchenwald, published by Gallimard in paperback (328 pages, in French).
Jorge Semprún recounts his deportation to the Buchenwald camp and the years he needed to accept life again after being liberated by Allied troops in 1945. The narrative interweaves memory, political and literary reflection, and shows how writing and remembrance become both a path to salvation and a re-encounter with death, in a book that is testimony and literary work.
Work published by Gallimard in 1994, in the nrf collection. In French.
For readers interested in testimonies of the Holocaust and the Second World War and in reflection on historical memory.

Jorge Semprún Maura was a Spanish writer and politician who lived in France most of his life and wrote primarily in French. From 1953 to 1962, during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, Semprún lived clandestinely in Spain working as an organizer for the exiled Communist Party of Spain, but was expelled from the party in 1964. After the death of Franco and the change to a democratic government, he served as Minister of Culture in Spain's socialist government from 1988 to 1991.
