«L'Écriture ou la vie» is a memoir by Jorge Semprún about his experience in Buchenwald, published by Folio in paperback, in French.
After being liberated from Buchenwald in 1945, Jorge Semprún reconstructs the difficult return to life and the long process of turning that experience into narrative. The book asks whether writing frees one from the past or, on the contrary, summons the horror anew; memory and European culture appear as forms of resistance.
Work originally published in 1994, winner of the Prix Femina Vacaresco. This French edition, number 2870 in the Folio collection, came out in 1996.
For readers of historical memoirs and twentieth-century European narrative, interested in a first-person testimony from Buchenwald.

Jorge Semprún Maura was a Spanish writer and politician who lived in France most of his life and wrote primarily in French. From 1953 to 1962, during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, Semprún lived clandestinely in Spain working as an organizer for the exiled Communist Party of Spain, but was expelled from the party in 1964. After the death of Franco and the change to a democratic government, he served as Minister of Culture in Spain's socialist government from 1988 to 1991.
