«Le Tarbouche» is the novel by Robert Solé, published by Seuil in paperback (420 pages, in French).
The novel follows the Batrakani family in Cairo in 1916, a cosmopolitan Egypt under British mandate: French education by the Jesuits, family business and adulterous loves. Charles nostalgically evokes his grandfather Georges and the era of the tarbouche, a symbol of a world that fades when the officers come to power.
Published in 1992, the novel won the Prix Méditerranée and belongs to the Cadre rouge collection from Seuil.
For readers of literary fiction interested in Egypt and historical family sagas.
