In the Val d'Annifer, the construction of the largest dam in Europe is coming to an end. Saint-Loup, a small nearby village, is the victim of mysterious attacks, the latest of which is the dynamiting of the bridge that connects it to the valley. Desiring to avoid police involvement, the mayor asks Lefranc to solve the problem. Lefranc accepts and begins his investigation, but the attacks continue, each time signed with a wolf's head drawn in charcoal and accompanied by a sinister laugh that resonates in the mountain. Lefranc's attention is drawn to a building "placed like a sugar cube on a mountain." He learns that it is a hotel built by English mountain lovers, but who were ruined because, as the mayor says, "you had to be crazy to build a hotel there, without a ski lift." Sensing that the key to the enigma lies between the walls of this building, Lefranc decides to go there, but everything conspires to prevent him from getting too close to a sad and sordid truth.
