«Le cheval d'orgueil» is the autobiographical work by Pierre Jakez Hélias, published by Plon / Terre humaine in hardback (575 pages, in French).
Pierre Jakez Hélias recalls his childhood in the Bigouden region of Brittany during the first half of the 20th century. Raised in a Breton-speaking home, he portrays a poor peasant society governed by a code of honour, with its traditions and folk beliefs, and defends the dignity of those peasants against cultural contempt.
Subtitled «Mémoires d'un Breton du pays bigouden», the work was translated from Breton by Pierre Jakez Hélias. It won the Prix Aujourd'hui 1975 and the Prix RTL grand public 1976.
It will appeal to those seeking accounts of rural life and Breton culture, as well as readers of history and popular memory.
