«Le Bâton d'Euclide» is the historical novel by Jean-Pierre Luminet, published by Le Livre de Poche in paperback (316 pages, in French).
In 642, General Amrou arrives in Alexandria with orders to burn the million books of the library. A philosopher, a physician and the mathematician Hypatia try to dissuade him by telling him the lives of scholars such as Euclid and Archimedes. Luminet combines historical epic and philosophical tale, with humour, and asks whether that loss was fanaticism or human madness.
Published in 2005, the work has the subtitle «Le roman de la Bibliothèque d'Alexandrie» and belongs to French historical fiction.
For readers of historical novels and for those interested in the Library of Alexandria and the sages of Antiquity.
