«La servante écarlate» is the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, published by Robert Laffont in paperback (537 pages, in French).
In the theocratic Republic of Gilead, born after a fertility collapse, fertile women are reduced to serving as sexual handmaids. Offred, one of them, stripped of her name and her past, lives subjugated to her Commander and his wife while remembering lost freedom; through a clandestine network she tries to regain her autonomy.
Originally published in English as The Handmaid's Tale in 1985, it is the first instalment of the series; this 2019 French edition includes an unpublished preface by the author.
For readers of dystopias and feminist fiction: the television adaptation The Handmaid's Tale, starring Elisabeth Moss, attests to its relevance.
