«La Pastora» is the historical novel by Manuel Villar Raso, published by Almuzara in paperback (208 pages, in Spanish).
A novel that reconstructs the story of Teresa (Florencio) Pla Messeguer, «la Pastora» of Vallibona, a legendary figure of the maquis. After her genital malformation was discovered by the Civil Guard, she began living as Florencio and was nicknamed «the terror of Caro», with 29 deaths attributed to her. The narrative asks whether she was a criminal or a victim.
Written in 1978, the novel is based on the fieldwork that Manuel Villar Raso carried out over three years during the political transition.
For readers interested in the history of the maquis and the Spanish postwar period, as well as in fictionalised biographies of real characters.
