«La morena de la copla» is Andrés Sopeña Monsalve's essay on the condition of women in the recent past, published by Crítica in 1996 in paperback (242 pages, in Spanish).
Drawing on coplas, advertisements and old texts, the author analyses with humour and rigour how Spanish women were educated to assume a role of inferiority and how various social discourses, from the lecture hall to the pulpit or the family, reinforced the idea that their place was in marriage and motherhood.
A work of social history with black-and-white illustrations and bibliography; belongs to the line of books arising from El florido pensil, also by Sopeña Monsalve.
