«La Méridienne» is the historical novel by Denis Guedj, published by Pocket in paperback (414 pages, in French).
In 1792, Méchain and Delambre set out to measure the meridian between Dunkerque and Barcelona to define a universal measure: the metre. The king's safe-conducts make them suspect; Delambre is dismissed and Méchain, after an accident and his flight to the Pyrenees, doubts his measurements. Seven years later, in 1799, the metre standard is consecrated.
Originally published in 1997; this Pocket edition is from 2003.
For readers of historical fiction with an interest in the French Revolution and the history of science.
