«La Légende d'Henry Smart» is the historical novel by Roddy Doyle, published by Editions 10/18 in paperback (497 pages, in French).
The novel follows Henry Smart, raised in the poor districts of Dublin, who survives by stealing and begging. At fourteen he takes part in the 1916 Easter Rising and becomes a legendary figure of Irish republicanism alongside Michael Collins. Violence, humour and social criticism combine in this raw portrait of the era.
First instalment of the The Last Roundup trilogy; it was originally published in English as «A Star Called Henry» in 1999 and was nominated for the Dublin Literary Award.
For readers of historical fiction and Irish literature, also for reading groups interested in Irish independence.
