The German invasion of Poland, on September 1, 1939, marked the beginning of World War II in Europe. It pitted the newly modernized army of the largest industrial power in Europe against the much smaller Polish army, and showed the world a new way of waging war: the Blitzkrieg (lightning war). The Panzer divisions were the spearhead of the German assault and the Stuka dive bombers sowed terror and chaos.
This book demonstrates that the Polish army was not as backward as has often been said and that its tank park was larger than that of the American army of the time. Its stubborn defense gave the Germans some surprises and caused them a relatively high number of casualties for such a short campaign.
