«La cuarta espada» is Santiago Roncagliolo's journalistic chronicle of Abimael Guzmán and Sendero Luminoso, published by Debate in hardback (288 pages).
Roncagliolo reconstructs the war between Sendero Luminoso and the Peruvian state in the 1980s and 1990s, which caused nearly 70,000 deaths. The book portrays Abimael Guzmán, a leader who considered himself the fourth sword of communism after Lenin, Stalin and Mao and who, without bearing arms, inspired kamikaze missions among his followers.
The work, published by Debate in 2007, is part of the «Crónica y Periodismo» collection and of Santiago Roncagliolo's trilogy on the Hispanic twentieth century (El amante uruguayo, Memorias de una dama).
This work is aimed at readers interested in the recent history of Peru, terrorism and narrative journalism.
