«La Controverse de Valladolid» is the play by Jean-Claude Carrière, published by Flammarion in paperback (128 pages, in French).
Set in the sixteenth century, the play pits Bartolomé de las Casas against Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda: the former defends the full humanity of the American Indians; the latter, their inferiority. Carrière turns this dispute into a reflection on justice, morality, and human nature during colonisation.
The play was originally published in 1992; this 2013 edition, in the Étonnants Classiques collection, reproduces the complete text.
For students of French and readers of historical theatre interested in the ethical debate over the conquest of America.
