«La Bête et la Belle» is the crime novel by Thierry Jonquet, published by Gallimard in paperback (224 pages, in French).
In a town on the French outskirts, Léon talks about the death that haunts his neighbourhood and a suspicious neighbour they call «el Culpable»: in his flat, rubbish bags pile up behind the closed shutters. The residents of the cité des Lilas Bleus and Inspector Gabelou begin to distrust. Between tale and crime novel, nothing is what it seems.
Edition published in 1998 in the collection «La Bibliothèque Gallimard», with the «texte & dossier» series and pedagogical apparatus.
Aimed at French secondary and high school students, it may also appeal to crime novel readers.

Thierry Jonquet was a French writer who specialised in crime novels with political themes. He was born in Paris; his most recent and best known novel outside France was Mygale (1984), then published in the US in 2003 by City Lights. Mygale was also published in the UK as Tarantula in 2005. He wrote over 20 novels in French, including Le bal des débris, Moloch and Rouge c'est la vie.
