«Kandy: een terugtocht» is the novella by F. Springer, published in paperback by Singel Uitgevers in 1998 (157 pages, in Dutch).
The narrator, Fergus Steyn, recalls his brief stay in Kandy, a camp in Ceylon, after his repatriation from the Dutch East Indies. Half a century later he wonders whether he could find his playmates of that time and what they would still have to say to one another. An inquiry into memory and what is shared.
For readers of contemporary Dutch fiction and for those looking for short stories about memory, distance and re-encounters with the past.
