«Journal des années de peste, 1986-1991» is Jean Dutourd's satirical essay, published by Plon in paperback (420 pages, in French).
The author, a member of the Académie française, turns French politics of 1986-1991 into an ironic and personal chronicle. He observes events from the moralist's distance, narrates them as a story of grotesque episodes, and sketches his protagonists with a caricaturist's stroke: an intimate diary that is also a portrait of France, written without yielding to political correctness.
Jean Dutourd was a member of the Académie française from 1978; the diary covers the period 1986-1991 and was published in France on 28 August 1997.
Recommended for readers interested in contemporary French politics, political satire, and personal diaries with a critical eye.
